Buzzy Bellew, un animateur de boîte de nuit au caractère bien trempé, a été témoin d'un meurtre commis par le gangster Ten Grand Jackson. Une nuit, deux des hommes de main de Jackson tuent Buzzy et jettent son corps dans le lac de Prospect Park, à Brooklyn. Sous la forme d'un fantôme, Buzzy fait alors appel à son jumeau, Edwin Dingle, un véritable rat de bibliothèque, pour qu'il le rejoigne à Prospect Park afin que tous deux puissent aider la police à coincer Jackson.
