Segunda Guerra Mundial, septiembre de 1944. En un intento de acabar la guerra por Navidad, Winston Churchill concibe un plan extraordinario: enviar 35.000 soldados tras las líneas enemigas, a la Holanda ocupada por los alemanes. Entre las tropas británicas hay un pequeño grupo de hombres cuyo nombre en clave es "Caja de Cerillas", y con un objetivo muy distinto: han de encontrar un impresionante tesoro de oro holandés y obras de arte que los nazis guardan en un lugar aparentemente inexpugnable.
